West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday expressed condolences to the family of a Ghaziabad journalist who was shot dead and said that "there has been an atmosphere of fear" in the country.
She said in a tweet, "My heartfelt condolences to the family of the fearless journalist Vikram Joshi, who passed away today. He was shot in UP for filing an FIR for molesting his niece."
Taking a dig at the government, Mamata Banerjee said, "There has been an atmosphere of fear in the country. The voices are being mocked. The media is not spared. Shocking."
Journalist Vikram Joshi, who was shot in the head by some assailants, succumbed to injuries early Wednesday.
According to officials, Joshi had lodged a complaint with the police alleging harassment of his niece on July 16 and was shot dead near her house in the Vijay Nagar area around 10.30 pm on Monday night.
"Yes, he (Vikram Joshi) is not. He died at around 4 am while undergoing treatment at the hospital," a family member told PTI.
Joshi, who works with a local daily, was admitted to a private hospital.
According to police, nine people have been arrested in the case so far.
