Speaking at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga asked viewers to mask off, and she led by example.
During her many appearances during the show, Gaga displayed an impressive collection of masks, but it is reasonable to assume that she does not take these into the GAP or that they can be matched by her aunt, who can sew.
These masks were 100% what one would expect from Gaga, the woman who once made charcuterie in a fashion statement.
Below, we rank Gaga's wonderfully OMG PPE -- because why not?
1. The song of the year mask
In the end, Proof Lady Gaga defeated all of us in the next stage of development: she has horns. With her new tusks, she will support social injustice and patriarchy. Hail to our horny queen, a celebrity who always remembers that VMAs are all fun and personal.
2. The "Rain On Me" performance mask
The irony is that Mask Gaga has not done anything during her performance that you would want to be rocking if it was really raining. For his electric duet with Ariana Grande, Gaga designed a mask with an electronic edge that seemed to react to the notes he was belting out. Perhaps it was her way of proving that she was actually singing, which would seem to be the thinking of only an artist like Gaga. If ever repeated by Best Buy, this mask will sell faster than you can say "Brain Piano."
3. The best collaboration mask
The entire look was similar to what the team had produced in Fox's "The Masked Singer" - in a great way. This was done unscrupulously, without being dishonest. The mask itself seemed like a project runway contestant if the challenge was simply to use material from Home Depot. They will win, by the way.4. The artist of the year/TRICON award mask
Possibly sponsored by Reynolds Rap, this mask was certainly the most accessible for Gaga's face coverings. It is glam without being too much, like you would wear something for a particularly luxurious trip to CVS. Gaga should have had special affection on it, as she wore it twice in Sunday's broadcast - once accepting the Artist of the Year award and again for her TRICON award.
