An approved coronavirus vaccine can only be effective 50-60% of the time, meaning that public health measures will still need to be kept under control, with top US infectious disease specialist Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Friday.

“We do not yet know what the efficacy could be. We do not know if it will be 50% or 60%. I like that it's 75% or more, '' Fossey said in a webinar hosted by Brown University. "But the chances of being 98% effective are not great, meaning you should never give up on the public health approach."
The novel Coronavirus has infected approximately 5 million people in the United States and killed more than 160,000 people.
The lockdown measures imposed to stop the virus from spreading have devastated the economy, which suffered the biggest setback since the Great Depression in the second quarter, with GDP falling at the fastest pace in at least 73 years .
As the infection has spread across the country since the opening of the states, public health experts including Fauci have emphasized the importance of steps that every American can take, including social disturbances, washing hands and wearing masks.
Fauci said on Friday that Modern Inc.'s study of the COVID-19 vaccine could yield definitive data in November or December this year.
He told Reuters earlier this week that he expects to receive tens of doses of COVID-19 vaccine initially by 2021, and one billion doses by the end of that year.
