National Sports Day 2020: Day, significance, celebration and quotes

National Sports Day

National Sports Day is celebrated on 29 August every year to honor Hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand. The Government of India has decided to celebrate his birthday as National Sports Day since 2012. Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju will pay tribute to Major Dhyan Chand at the Dhyan Chand Stadium in New Delhi on his birth anniversary.


Celebration

Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, this year President Ram Nath Kovind will give the National Sports and Adventure Awards on August 29 on National Sports Day. Kiren Rijiju, Narendra Dhruv Batra - President of the Indian Olympic Association, and other dignitaries will attend the event from Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Major Dhyan Chand achievements

India's greatest hockey player Major Dhyan Chand won three Olympic gold medals. At the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936, Dhyan Chand was appointed as the captain of the Indian hockey team. Dhyan Chand had scored more than 400 international goals in his international career from 1926 to 1948. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honor, in the year 1956 by the Government of India.

Major Dhyan Chand Singh came to be known worldwide as the 'Wizard of Hockey'. He was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh. He joined the Indian Army in 1922 as a soldier.
